Barrie’s Notes MGB GT V8 in 21st Century

The book highlights useful information on the V8 engine – threads, corrosion, cylinder heads, the rocker shafts and hydraulic tappets, oil pressure and engine mounts. He touches on ethanol in motor fuel and the undesirable effects on rubber fuel hose and the absorption of water, particularly when a car is stored over winter. His coverage of ignition components and maintenance are helpful and he concludes his car is noticeably smoother and more responsive since fitting an electronic ignition package. Ten pages of notes on the gearbox and overdrive are good although he recommends removing overdrive on third gear but recognises others feel it is an attractive feature , but one that needs to be used carefully. His coverage of electrics on a V8 ends with some suggested modifications – the popular replacement of the sealed beams with a halogen upgrade, a relay on the twin horns to overcome difficulties with the horn push mechanism, rerouting the twin cooling fan wiring to a spare terminal on the alternator and adding a blade fuse, and upgrading the single speed heater fan to the later two speed spec. There is no mention of the benefits of a single 12 volt battery conversion to replace the original twin six volt arrangement and no mention of the addition of a simple blade fuse on the overdrive circuit to the solenoid. He covers suspension and brakes well including brief comments on modifications like anti-tramp bars, castor reduction and rear anti-roll bars.

    T Register poster

This is a poster of the backdrop we used for our stand at MG Live 2017 using a great photograph by Colin Murrell, the MGCC’s race photographer. The poster is 23in x 16in in size, printed on A2 220gsm semi gloss paper, so they will fit in either a common imperial size frame or in a metric A2 frame if you wish to mount it.
The extra cost for posting and packing in a cardboard tube will be advised on order.

T Register Practical MG TD Maintenance, Update and Innovation

The T Register is all too aware that there are those with T Types who are not experienced at working on them. This book is written by Jonathan Goddard, an enthusiast who has rebuilt his TD from the proverbial box of bits, making improvements and non-intrusive changes for better safety, reliability and enjoyment as he did so to make the car more useable in modern conditions. As such it provides a useful insight into what is involved in working on a T Type and, in particular, a TD from the perspective of an enthusiastic amateur.

    MG Wartime Activities

This is the first major reprint of the MG War Time Activities book and is now produced in glossy artwork paper complete with additional pictures and information. The book was originally produced after the War and given to some members of the work force as a memento of the great work they had done during the dark years of the Second World War. Originally the author was unknown, but due to a chance phone call from Peter Watson to the Club offering to donate some MG memorabilia, it was discovered that his Grandfather, George Propert, General Manager of MG during some of the war years, was in fact the author of the original book. This has now been credited to him and the reprint is now produced with the full permission of Peter.

For those who have not already read a copy of the photocopied reproduction, the book covers each year at the factory during the war. They had to deal with some insurmountable problems which the diligence of the workers and the initiative of management saw them through. An example of this was the building of the Albemarle fuselage (the main fuselage of a relatively unknown medium bomber). The time taken in testing all the circuitry took days, but due to the initiative of two radio technicians working at the factory, a test rig was built which not only cut the time to test the system, but did it far more accurately. This is just one example of how difficulties were overcome.

    MG Pictorial History

MG is renowned as one of the world’s most famous sports marques. This book relates its complete story, starting with the 1923 two-seater, and MG’s early triumph, the Midget, with its racing success. The Magnas and Magnettes followed, leading into the post-war TC Midget, and the successful MGA and the MGB. Though MG fell victim to corporate politics in the late 60s, it made a comeback with the MGF in the early 90s.
